I bought a bunch of photo cubes at a dollar tree a couple years ago because a friend had made me a nice gift with one and I loved the idea. Well... of course they sat in my "alterables" area for a LONG time and went unused. While I was in Austin a couple months ago, I went to Archivers and there was a photo cube there but inside they did not use a cube of paper, instead it was an X of paper. I said out loud, "mental note, paper in an X in the photo cubes", and went on shopping.
I decided to try out the idea and use one of the many photo cubes I had sitting in my stamp room. It was a comedy of errors as far as configuring the correct dimensions to use, but I finally got it just the way I wanted it and this is what I came up with. :)

Here are the directions that I typed up for a class I taught in October. We made this exact photo cube and it was a LOT of fun!

Christmas Cube
By Jody Morrow

Cutting Your Paper In Preparation:
  • 4 pieces of card stock: 4 ¾ X 3 ¼ scored at 2 3/8 (I used dark green)
  • 2 pieces of card stock: 3 ¼ X 3 ¼ (I used dark green)
  • 8 pieces of patterned paper: 2 ¼ X 3 1/8 (I used 4 each of 2 designs)
  • 8 pieces of solid patterned paper: 2 X 2
  • 4 pieces of patterned paper: 3 1/8 X 3 1/8 (I used 2 each of 2 designs)
  • 6 snowflakes punched from white solid patterned paper

Directions

  • Stamp and color images, then embellish with glitter
  • Trim around images with paper cutter and mat using a piece of card stock (brown) that is 1/8 inch larger on each side. (If your image is 1 X 2, your mat will be 1 1/8 X 2 1/8)
  • Adhere the 8 pieces of patterned paper to the 4 pieces of scored card stock
  • Build each page as shown in pictures
  • Adhere the edges of the scored card stock together to form an X
  • Insert pieces in cube and close (top and bottom piece are simply laid in cube)

Alternate cube ideas

  • Cover pages with pictures
  • Use ONLY pictures to fill
  • Use friendship sentiments
  • Make it more dimensional inside like a shadow box

  8. Oh Wow!!! This is a great idea. I have been racking my brain of what to do for my MIL for Christmas. This would be good to do a simple scrappage of my boys for her to put on her desk at work. I am going to have to run this by the hubby to see if he likes the idea as well (it is his mother after all hehehe) TFS!!!

  25. I am so glad I ran across this today. I just altered one of these not a week ago. I tried to make my own cube by using the insert as a pattern and failed miserably. (I guess my ruler and I are not friends) Your cube is so much cuter and more functional, I think this form gives you so much more alterable space. Thank you for including the pattern directions, when I saw the photos at the beggining of the post I figured I was going to have to e-mail you and beg you to give a random stranger the directions.

Anyway, it is beautiful - thanks again.
