Liquid Applique: Instant Gratification VS Following the Directions

Liquid Applique is a product I have had in my stash for almost 5 years. It is a liquid substance that you squirt on your paper, heat with a heat tool, and it puffs up. It can be used on images like popcorn, Santa suits, bunny tails, slippers... etc. You get the picture, right? I have used it occasionally and have achieved barely acceptable results. Now I know why! LMBO! Please read on if you are Liquid Applique challenged! I am about to change your Liquid Applique life! I promise! LOL

Here is my bottle of liquid applique. I stamped an image from my MFT set, Tea for Two. This image is responsible for my Liquid Applique *light bulb* moment! When using this stamp, I decided I wanted a fluffy bunny tail!
Before I used the Liquid Applique, I read the directions. See how it says LET DRY? Remember that! Ok, moving on....

When using Liquid Applique, just squirt some on the card stock like this. You can move the stuff around with the tip of the applicator to smooth it out a bit.
Then you heat set with a heat tool (embossing gun) and when you heat set it immediate;y (without allowing it to dry) it gets all bubbly and crazy like this. I mean, it KINDA looks like a bunny tail, right? Except for the part that it is lumpy and bumpy. Truth be told the stuff underneath isn't even dry yet. If I were to press on this tail right now, goo would squish out. Gross, but true. Want to know how I know that? I have tried it before. I wanted to smooth out the bumps once and... well... instead stuff smooshed out and it was ruined!

A couple days BEFORE I took the above pictures, I was working on a card using Tea for Two and after coloring the images (I has stamped 2 of them), I decided I wanted to have a fluffy bunny tail. Now, having been annoyed with Liquid Applique in the past, I decided to read the directions. As hard as it was to follow the directions, I squirted out the stuff on both tails and set the images aside to work with the next day. Waiting is hard for me. I am an instant gratification type of girl, but I did it. I waited a WHOLE 24 HOURS! Proud of me? LOL This is what it looks like after drying for 24 hours. It gets kinda flat and glossy and hard.

When I went to heat it, I wondered how it would work since it wasn't wet. But LOOK! Look at that perfect little bunny tail. No gross bulges and bumps. No weird misshapen bumps. No messy goo underneath. Nope... just a cute little bunny tail that is fairly evenly bumpy and actually REALLY cute!

Look at the difference! To think for FIVE years I have been squirting and heating and NOT following the directions. Look what I have been missing! LOL

Cute little bunny tails!

Lesson learned! No matter HOW hard it is to wait, I WILL wait!

  3. OMG, what a difference!! I've never waited either and have always gotten the lumpy, bumpy, ooey, gooey result. Well, I'm sold...I'll wait next time and do it the right way. Awesome write-up showing the process and comparison.

  7. I've always been uninspired to purchase it because I've seen others with all those ugly bumps. Now that you show me what it is supposed to look like, I guess I better go get me some:) TFS!

  10. Thank you soooo much for the info. Read the directions very fast. I used this the same way as you did for cupcake tops bumpy! But now they will look even better! I will use it for my bunny tails also. Have a great day!

  11. haha! I've never waited, obviously I've never really read the directions! I always hated the way it looked on my cards so I've trashed them. NOW I know why it looked crappy....thanks for pointing out the correct way. Although I'm one who doesn't have patience...hmmmm wonder if I should give this a go again? OK maybe soon! TFS!

  12. Thank you...ya learn something new every day! I have never waited to let it dry...always used the heat tool and never liked the results. Now I too, will wait and let it. It's so much nicer!

  14. Oh my goodness; you are a ROCK STAR and so helpful! I feel like a dork because I have NEVER waited and now I know to, what a difference it makes!

  15. OMG!!! I've been doing it wrong for the last 5 years too!!!! How FUNNY. I have NO patience hence I have a hard time with crystal effects as well!
Now if I can only let my projects sit for 24 hours, I have to say the results are worth the wait. :)

  16. oooh I feel your pain, I have ZERO patience but after seeing the difference, I may have to wait from now on!!

  17. Add me to the club - LOL!! GREAT post!!!

  18. Wow, guess I never read the directions either! I love how smooth and cuter it turns out when you wait. Guess that means I'll actually have to do some planning when I want to use Liquid Applique from now on so that I can get this cute effect.

  19. I honestly think it's still cute lumpy and bumpy, so I never let mine dry overnight. Now that I can actually see the difference, you KNOW I am waiting from now on. Thanks for the tip!

  21. Hey Jody... thx 4 the tip! I saw this stuff demo'd once at a local stamp show, and guess what?
They didn't let it dry either. LOL!
I wasn't impressed and didn't buy any of it.
Now that I have seen your cute bunny tail, I have changed my mind. I am going to have to find some of this now. It looks like it would be fun to play with and it's also nice to know it lasts for at least 5 years. All good to know.
    Cheers,
    Stacy

  23. Wow - thanks for this. I'm also applique challenged, and this is a good visual to see what I could get with just a little patience.

  24. I did the same comparison last year and was amazed at the difference!! It is sooo hard to wait but definitely worth it! Such a cute card!

  25. OMG I always thought the flat glossy was the final product?? I've never used the heat gun on it. Now I can't wait to try it the right way. I never read the directions. I thought it was supposed to puff up on it's own and I always thought I just bought a dud tube. Too funny.

  26. Add me to the list of immediate gratification stampers. I can never wait, always hit it with the gun because, well usually I'm under the gun! LOL!

    How totally cute.

Don't they know we're not good at waiting, for anything? Giggle.

Thanks for the tutorial Jody, you're the best!

  28. I used it once at a friend's house and decided I didn't like how it was uncontrollable and bumpy. Now I know--it doesn't have to be!! Ack!! I'm totally going to buy some now. :)

    Thanks for the GREAT tip!

I am not sure if I can part my ways with instant gratification, but your 24 hours later bunny tail is pretty AWESOME!

  30. Jodi, thanks for the tutorial. I've had my liquid applique for almost that long and NEVER noticed that I was supposed to let it dry before I heat embossed it! Now I know why I get those ugly bumps!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. You crack me up! I didn't see anything wrong with the bumpy tail, but comparing the two, I do like the little fluffy one better. (I've never tried that stuff.)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lol...what a fun tutorial...but I gotta admit I like the look of both!! Sometimes lumpy and bumpy is good...on a card anyway...lol!!

  33. I "hare" ya, that could be frustrating! Now I will squirt mine and wait..............

  34. WOW! Total light bulb moment :)
I have to try this! I have all sorts of colors sitting in a drawer :))

    ReplyDelete
  35. HA! I knew that but still refuse to wait! I don't use it often enough just for that reason.
    TFS!

  36. OMG. Epiphany. I don't read directions either and my puffies always turned out like your puffies. This is fabulous! Thank you!

  41. haha! This is so funny! It's why I've stopped using liquid applique..I was heating it right away & getting the same terrible results. Thank you for actually posting examples of what it should look like & for reminding us to READ THE DIRECTIONS! Love it! Gotta go buy some of this stuff!

  42. It's not supposed to be lumpy???? (seriously) Oops! I read the directions but I just put an "or" in there. Let dry OR heat with heat tool....
